What is Ayurveda?

When I began practicing yoga a few years ago, I would hear the term “Ayurveda” every now and then in the studio. I would wonder, what is this Ayurveda stuff anyways?

Well, it is known as the “sister science of yoga. You see, yoga means “union”, and it is really much more than what we think of it in the West. We generally think of yoga as a set of physical postures that one does to stay fit or relax. This is just a part of the big picture.

Yoga is really a complete way of life; from how we view and interact with the world to how we take care of ourselves with the foods we eat ,ways we keep our immune system healthy, and yes, doing the physical yoga postures, or asanas.

So Ayurvedic medicine, or Ayurveda is a natural system of medicine that complements a yogic way of life. However, one does not have to be a yogi to reap the many benefits of Ayurveda.

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word that translated to “science of life”. It was conceived and used first by the ancient seers, who are called rishis. They passed these teachings down orally for thousands of years, until finally the system was written down around the 5th or 6th century BC.

Ayurveda’s Relevance in Today’s World
Ayurveda focuses on rejuvenation of the body and preventing disease and extension of lifespan. It focuses on eliminating the causes of illness, so one can live life to the fullest. In Ayurveda, the mind and body work as one to create the most meaningful life force available. This makes perfect sense, as how can one be truly happy and content (acheive total wellness) without all areas of ones life being fulfilled.

This concept is certainly relevant in today’s disease laden world, where poor diet and lack of a knowledge of proper nutrition is all too rampant. Ayurveda gets to the root cause of the issue, where traditional medicine treats the symptom.

The Doshas
Ayurvedic philosophy says that the 5 elements combine together in pairs and they form the 3 doshas. These are forces that interact with one another dynamically. They are called Vatta, Pitta, and Kapha.

Each of these corresponds to various organs and function of and in our bodies, and also controls many of our impulses as well.

So, by understanding whether we are more Vatta, or Pitta, for example, will dictate which kind of diet is best for us, or how much exercise we should get, how we can best deal with stress.

This, of course is just the tip of the iceberg, bu you can begin to see how Ayurveda can help in not only diagnosing issues, but really getting you into a regimen that is right for your specific needs. The key is making sure that the 3 doshas within you are in balance.

There is a dosha test you can take yourself to see what category you are in.
Go HERE for the self-test.

I have also found a great liquid nutrition product that is endorsed and used by some of the most world renowned Ayurvedic practitioners in the world. Formulated with a certain super food, it boasts great rejuvenation and healing properties. You can check that out HERE.

Increase your sun exposure

While I was growing up it was always reported that getting to much sun causes skin cancer. This has been the normal thought for many years now.

But a study coming out recently from Stanford University reveals what many naturopathic doctors have been saying for years- that sun exposure decreases your risk of cancer!

Yes, decreases your risk of cancer. Let’s find out why.

Sun exposure increases your level of vitamin D in your body. while you can get vitamin D from the foods you eat, something like 90 percent comes from exposure to the sun. Vitamin D is one of the most anti-cancer vitamins there is, and exposure to the sun(specifically UVB radiation) converts cholesterol into vitamin D.

However, do NOT stay out long enough to get sunburned. A sunburn is your body’s way of saying “ok, I’ve gotten too much!” Don’t let it get to this point. If you are fair skinned and are not used to being in the sun, you will need o go a little at a time. Go out for ten or fifteen minutes a day, then gradually increase your exposure. Eventually an hour out in the sun a day is usually enough for a light skinned person. A darker skinned person will need probably something like 2 times to even 5 times as much sun exposure to gain enough vitamin D.

The sun is the BEST source of vitamin D, as your body cannot overdose on vitamin D from sun exposure. It can, however, overdose from vitamin D supplements. Use the sun!

Another important note is that if you are out in the sun and you sweat, make sure that you cool down before you shower. You need to let your body absorb the vitamin D that was formed on your skin. If you shower too soon, you could actually wash some of it off!

This is an excerpt from an article written by John Cannell, MD, on vitamin D.

Unlike any other vitamin, vitamin D is actually a prehormone. It is your body’s only source of potent steroid hormone called calcitriol. How does this happen naturally? First, your skin makes vitamin D when sunlight strikes a precholesterol molecule. Then your liver converts vitamin D into the storage form called calcidiol (25-hydroxy vitamin D). The body stores calcidiol in the blood and fat for later use.

(Your doctor can measure calcidiol with a blood test to find out if you are vitamin D deficient. Ideal calcidiol [25-hydroxy vitamin D] levels are between 35-65 ng/ml [87-162 nm/L], year around.)

If you have enough calcidiol in your blood, then the real action starts. Some calcidiol goes to the kidneys to help maintain blood calcium levels but the real story is in your tissues. Tissues all over your body convert calcidiol into calcitriol. Calcitriol, or activated vitamin D, is the most potent steroid hormone in the human body. It is active in picogram quantities or 1/1,000,000,000,000 of a gram.

Like all steroid hormones, calcitriol works by turning your genes on and off. That is, in hundreds of tissues throughout your body, calcitriol demasks your genome! It signals your genes to make hundreds of enzymes and proteins crucial to maintaining health and fighting disease.

There is a fantastic book related to this subject, called The Healing Sun: Sunlight and Health in the 21st Century, by Dr Richard Hobday.

So let’s all get out into the sun!!
